Lesson 23 – Subtracting Yardage From a Shot   no comments

23.1 Basics
If you watched the entire 8 part series on Youtube about Tiger’s clinic, then you will have heard this, although it is worth repeating:

1. Hitting the ball lower is going to subtract from the distance the ball flies, as compared to your normal shot.
2. Hitting the ball higher will usually add to the distance the ball flies, as compared to your normal shot.

23.2 When to hit the ball lower
When you want the ball to hit, and then run up onto the green, hitting the ball lower can be a great option.

, blade putter
, I know of a couple of courses where the area in front of the green is really hard, and it’s often easy to club down, hit it low, and let the ball roll up. It really is the percentage play.

The most likely reason for hitting the ball lower, however, is when you are hitting into the wind. The higher you get the ball, the more of an effect the wind has on it.

Just remember that the ball will fly shorter, so account for that. It is difficult to hit one or two clubs above what we normally do, even if it is the right play. However, that is really the ego getting in the way. Don’t be afraid to club up and strike it solidly. Most, blade putter
, people leave approaches to the green short; not long.

*Testing the wind- As a rule, I’ve, blade putter
, learned this: take some blades of grass and hold them up at shoulder height, then drop them.

For every putter length they fly before hitting the ground, that’s about 10 mph wind. Accordingly, I add/subtract 1 club for each 10mph in wind.

23.2.1 Choking up on the club
Choking up on the club can also be a great way to, blade putter
, hit it lower. It also adds a bit more “bite” to the ball, helping you to stop it quickly. However, make one setup adjustment: play the ball back in your stance a touch, to account for the steeper swing you will make.

Is it possible to hit it from the same part in your stance? Of course, but we are just trying to make things easier.

23.3 Driving the Ball Lower
The most likely reason for wanting to hit your drive lower is when you are hitting into the, blade putter
, wind. This can be a great play,, blade putter
, and even into the wind, you can get some good distance with this type of shot, assuming you hit the, blade putter
, fairway.

How to do it: Tee the ball lower, as you probably have heard. Not by much, though, but by just enough to “notice it” feel, blade putter
, lower. With the driver,, blade putter
, any difference in the setup is magnified. The most important part of hitting this shot well is to make sure you swing at the same tempo you usually would and finish with your navel pointing down the center of the fairway as you finish.

When driving the ball lower, it is really easy, blade putter
, to get steep or sweep across the ball and shut the clubface. Make some practice swings beforehand, making sure your navel finishes down the center of the fairway. Then watch the ball go there, too.
